21st Century American and Opportunity For the Dream
The 21st Century American is hard to define. There is a vast difference between different parts of the country in both culture and opportunity. The U.S. lacks a real sense of cultural identity. What does it really mean to be an American? It is hard to answer because this country was built on the diversity of some many. The history of this nation isn't rooted in any tradition above turkey on Thanksgiving. The typical American feels entitled, and is looking out for themselves above the greater good of all. I do believe that people are more globally aware of what is going on, but it is becoming harder to give and give like we have in the past. The economy sucks and the government is making itself harder to trust. The American of today finds it harder to make ends meet. It sucks for sure but, with unemployment above 10 percent, life is more of a struggle than it once was. Opportunity is available but it is harder to get. If only from a purely numbers perspective, the competition for jobs is greater. There are more jobs going overseas, more people are coming to the states, and the requirements for jobs is increasing. Opportunity itself is not even equal to all. I didn't always believe that or at least I didn't want to believe that but opportunity is not available in the same capacity to all. Anyone can do just about anything is they try, even to the point of death it might seem, but people can do what they want if they work at it. The difference is the starting point. Some people are at a disadvantage from the get go. If a kids growing up in poor Urban America, he will not have the same opportunity or will have to work harder to get them than a kids growing up in upper class white suburbia. The American dream can be had by anyone, but the work put forth to achieve it is not always the same.

My thoughts exactly. The difficulties Americans face today are only made worse by the economy and the government officials who have brought us to such a point and continue to disappoint. When children are born into a crappy situation and our nation's leaders only make it crappier, the hope of finding the American Dream is seriously diminished. Opportunity certainly is not equal to all. Although America is supposed to be a melting pot, it sure has been difficult to shake discrimination in this country.
ReplyDeletei agree with you. americans dont realy have one identey. diversity is what makes up our country. the dificility with in the country is also this diversity. you can never please everyone. and as far as the government i agree with that also. if americans contiue to let the country go in the direction it is headed we are in big trouble but it is up the the people as a whole and as individuals to force the government into doing the things that need to be done to fix the country.
ReplyDeleteAmerica definitely does not exemplify the saying equal pay for equal work. Their are people that I know that won't ever have to work nearly as hard as others to make it through life because of who their family is. Their are people who do not have to work their way through school because their family can afford to pay for all their bills and because of who their father knows as soon as they get out of college they're making good money and they didn't have to work hard for it. They did not have to climb the ladder in order to be successful. Now we have all these executives who don't know what its like to be the little guy and thats one of the main problems with big cooperations today. Good advise to anyone in power would be to think about whats its like to be the people you are bossing around.... its sad but many adults need to go back and learn a kindergarten lesson. Treat others like you want to be treated.
ReplyDeleteThis is the land of opportunity. the harder you work the more successful you can be. Motivation can play a huge part in pursuing your dream. Cant always expect someone to hand you a job, you might have to put in effort to accomplish your goals. We are all destined to be something in life but you can alter your destiny according to what we want to put into it.
ReplyDeleteOriginally the American Dream was that if you work hard enough it doesnt matter how big you dream, anything is attainable. In today's society I think this has changed. Now it is much more of a "how much can I get in life with minimal effort" attitude. The part about hard work is beginning to fade to black, and that was always the most important part. IF you work HARD you can achieve whatever you set your mind to, but if you do NOT work hard you will NOT reach your dream. This should be the dream, slowly we have been drifting away from this idea for years and it is reaching an all time level of laziness. We are losing what it is we were founded on, the 'pursuit' is gone. Now it is just a want for happiness. No work is being done.
